ABOUT ME:
Mara Weyel lives and works in Augsburg, Germany. She holds a Diploma in Design / Master of Arts and studied at Hochschule Augsburg and École Estienne in Paris, with further study periods at University of the Arts London.
She began her professional career in graphic design and worked for 15 years as an Art Director at a leading design agency in Augsburg (KW Neun Grafikagentur). Since 2022, she has been working independently as a designer and artist. Since 2025, she has also been teaching Visual Communication at Hochschule Augsburg.
Her background in design continues to shape both fields of her practice. Analytical precision, structural clarity, typography, and an awareness of visual systems form a foundation for her work — while her artistic practice deliberately pushes beyond the functional logic of design.
Today, Mara works across two interconnected but independent fields: graphic design and fine art.

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Mara Weyel is a graphic designer with a focus on typography, colour, visual identity, and visual storytelling. Her approach combines conceptual thinking with a strong sensitivity to form, creating visual languages that are distinctive, coherent, and tailored to each project.
Rather than treating design as decoration, she develops systems that give content a clear and recognizable voice. From corporate identities and websites to editorial projects and campaigns, she considers every element — colour, shape, image, illustration, typography, and composition — as part of a larger visual narrative.
Her 15 years of experience as an Art Director, combined with her independent practice since 2022, allow her to work both strategically and intuitively. She develops visual concepts from the initial idea through to their concrete application, balancing structure and experimentation, precision and expression.
Her design work has received numerous national and international distinctions, including the German Design Award, European Design Awards, Red Dot Award, iF Award, TDC Type Directors Club, and 100 Best Posters.
ART
Mara Weyel approaches the body as political material: as a surface onto which social norms, identities, desires, memories, and cultural codes are inscribed. At the same time, she understands the body as a space of resistance, self-empowerment, transformation, and redefinition.
Her artistic practice moves between painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and visual language. Rather than depicting the body as an idealized form, she fragments, transforms, abstracts, and reassembles it. The body becomes a material through which questions of identity and social conditioning can be made visible.
A central part of her current practice is the investigation of signs and writing systems. Weyel studies historical scripts, logograms, symbols, and systems of visual communication and uses them as starting points for developing her own visual codes. Her ongoing project of a “body alphabet” translates gestures, postures, and bodily movements into signs, creating an evolving system of writing rooted in corporeality.
This interest in language is closely connected to questions of cultural identity, appropriation, power, and who has the authority to create, define, and read signs. Weyel does not seek to reproduce existing systems, but to question how systems of meaning are constructed and to experiment with the possibility of inventing new ones.
Her works often emerge through processes of fragmentation, reordering, repetition, and dissolution. What appears broken can become material for transformation — a process she understands as a form of repair and self-redefinition. Playfulness and physicality remain important elements, allowing serious questions of identity and social coding to coexist with ambiguity, humour, and experimentation.
Her background in graphic design informs this practice through an ongoing interest in structure, typography, colour, composition, and visual systems. At the same time, her artistic work deliberately resists the clarity and functionality expected from design. Clean visual structures meet raw materials, expressive gestures, and deliberately unresolved forms.
Mara Weyel has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Germany and internationally, including a solo exhibition at the Textil- und Industriemuseum (TIM) Augsburg and exhibitions in Munich, Berlin, Augsburg, London, and Mexico City. She is also active as a curator and cultural organizer. She serves on the board of Kunstverein Augsburg and is a member of Schöne Felder e.V., contributing to the independent art and cultural scene in Augsburg.
AWARDS:
My awards come mostly from my long career as a GRAPHIC designer: several Red Dot Awards, German Design Awards, countless European Design Awards, a few TDC Type Directors Club Awards, of course a bunch of iF Awards, 100 Best Posters.
And a few ROY POP Awards along the way.
For my ARTISTIC practice, I have consciously stopped applying for awards. Ageism is alive and well in the art world: if you start making art later in life, apparently you have already missed the boat. Youth is often mistaken for potential, while age is treated as a late arrival.
I am not interested in playing along with that logic. I started when I started. My work does not need to prove that I was young enough to deserve attention.
